The boys passed a leisurely day playing video games and watching reruns. Ed arrived home suddenly in the early afternoon, announcing that he had great news to share with them.
"I've got a gig!" He shouted excitedly.
Tom and Charlie congratulated him, promising to come and watch him. Ed could hardly sit still all afternoon, until finally Tom took action.
"Ed, don't you think we should go down to the venue and check out the acoustics and stuff?" Tom suggested.
A moment later the three boys were walking out the door.
"We need to tether you to the earth, Ed, otherwise you'll bounce right off!" Tom exclaimed.
Tom got them purposefully a little lost on the walk to the venue, because he didn't want to get there too quickly and the exercise would probably help calm his nerves. They got there a little early, but not excessively so. Ed went to set up, and his mates helped him. It seemed no time at all before the three boys were getting booted away so Ed could play. They went and sat in a corner nearby, with a good view of Ed but not too crowded at the same time.
Ed began to play, the first chord ringing out, his voice opening up to join it. His voice played with the intricate notes played below it, challenging and competing with the complex harmony of notes joining together and floating gently through the room. To the general crowd Ed was a good singer, and sounded nice. To his friends, who were musicians themselves, the song was a piece of utter perfection that each of them would be proud to produce themselves, and their pride now swelled to encompass their talented friend, who at that point in time was living a moment in the spotlight.
Charlie closed his eyes to better appreciate the art floating about the room. His head was throbbing slightly, and he felt the series of sleepless nights of the past week press heavily on him. He was so sick of being confused. The uncertainty had been wearing him out, and now he just wanted to sleep, to forget about Alex and loose himself in Eds voice. He felt slightly dizzy, and Toms voice was muffled when he spoke. He didn't know what Tom was saying, but what did it really matter.
"Charlie! Charlieburg!" Tom was worried. Charlie had just slumped off his seat and was even now on the floor. "Charlie!"
Finally, Charlie opened his eyes.
"Charlie? You ok?" Tom asked with concern.
"'M ok, Tom. Just a bit tired...." Charlie trailed off.
"C'mon, we'll go get some fresh air and clear your head." Tom scooped Charlie off the floor, propped him back up on his own legs and began to steer him to the door. Charlie resisted feebly but soon found himself standing outside. Charlie closed his eyes and leant against the cold brick wall.
"Charlie?" Tom squatted down next to where Charlie sat slumped on the cold pavement, propped against the harsh red brick by the door.
A woman approached the two men at about the same time as Alex joined them.
"Is he alright, Tom?" Alex asked, seeing Charlie still in his unwell state despite the air.
"Sorry boys, is there anything I can do?" The woman asked, her long honey coloured hair spilling over her shoulders and her blue eyes filled with concern.
"I don't know what's wrong with him," Tom responded, turning his worried gaze briefly to the unknown woman, "He hasn't had a drop to drink, and he certainly hasn't taken drugs. We've been with him all afternoon, and there's nothing I can think of that could have brought this on. He was well, had no underlying health problems and hasn't eaten anything we haven't so he can't have food poisoning or anything....." Tom trailed off.
"What's his name?" The woman asked, turning to Charlie.
"Charlie" the two other boys said in unison.
"Charlie." She said decisively, then "Charlie, Charlie, Charlie. What IS the matter with you? You're a good boy, yet here you sit. Where does it hurt. Charlie? My name is Sarah, and I need to know what hurts. C'mon Charlie, don't be silly. It's rude to ignore people, you know. And your friends are here too. What must they think, with you not talking to us. Charlie! Wake up THIS INSTANT! This is neither the time nor the place to be falling asleep, and we don't appreciate it. Listen, that man in there is singing his heart out and you're missing it!"
She paused there as Charlie stirred slightly.
"Ed.'s Ed....." he mumbled
"The man singing. It's our friend Ed." Alex explained.
"Charlie! How could you let your friend perform in there without your support? Poor guy, he probably thinks you abandoned him! You need to wake up and go in there to support him!"
"'M sorry......M'head....hurts....can't open....m'eyes....so heavy....."
"Listen Charlie," Sarah said rather matter of factly, "Your friends are calling the ambulance now," she shot a glance at the two boys hovering around, and Alex instantly pulled out his phone to make the necessary call, "And then the doctors are going to look at you. You need to promise me, for Ed's sake and for your other friends, that you'll keep trying to stay awake. Just listen to my voice, Charlie, concentrate on my voice. It'll be ok soon. Can you still hear me, Charlie?"
Sorry it's so late in coming. I have no organisational skills and I also wrote it all then lost it, so.....oh well....
